29 июля состоялось первое мероприятие публичной программы “Talks: Books on Photography” Галереи современного искусства Государственного музея изобразительных искусств Республики Татарстан. На онлайн-платформе Zoom прошла презентация книги американского профессора славистики в Тулейнском университете, историка архитектуры, фотографа, члена Российской академии архитектуры и строительных наук, почетного члена Российской академии художеств Уильяма Брумфилда «Journeys through the Russian Empire. The Photographic Legacy of Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky» (Duke University Press, 2020). В презентации приняли участие американские и российские исследователи фотографии, искусствоведы и фотографы.
Профессор Брумфилд рассказал о многолетнем процессе работы над книгой. История ее написания берет свое начало в 1970 году, когда он впервые посетил Советский Союз. Эта поездка оказала значительное влияние на исследовательский путь Уильяма Брумфилда: его научные интересы сместились с русской литературы на изучение и фотографирование русской архитектуры. В настоящее время около 150 000 фотографий Брумфилда входят в коллекцию Национальной галереи искусств в Вашингтоне и около 1 200 фотографий являются частью собрания Библиотеки Конгресса США
В 1985 году Брумфилда пригласили стать куратором первой выставки цветных фотографий из коллекции известного российского фотографа и изобретателя Сергея Михайловича Прокудина-Горского (1863-1944) в Библиотеке Конгресса США. Выставка открылась осенью 1986 года и стала настоящей сенсацией. Оцифровка коллекции в начале 2000-х годов сделала ее доступной для всех желающих (https://www.loc.gov/collections/prokudin-gorskii/about-this-collection/). С тех пор фотоколлекция Прокудина-Горского вызывает постоянное внимание со стороны исследователей и широкой аудитории. В книге Брумфилда представлено сравнение архитектурных фотографий Прокудина-Горского и своих собственных, созданных на несколько десятилетий позже. Это позволило ввести в научный оборот огромное количество фотографий из двух значимых коллекций и показать жизнь архитектурного наследия России и Центральной Азии в разные эпохи.
В презентации профессор Брумфилд также поделился историей двух фотоколлекций. Особое внимание он уделил деятельности Прокудина-Горского, показал цветные фотографии начала ХХ века и прояснил технические детали их создания. В конце мероприятия Уильям Брумфилд ответил на вопросы слушателей. Запись презентации будет опубликована с субтитрами на русском языке в социальных сетях галереи. On July 29 there occurred the first event in the public program “Talks: Books on Photography” for the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan. This online Zoom meeting presented the new book “Journeys through the Russian Empire. The Photographic Legacy of Sergey Prokudin-Gorsky” (Duke University Press, 2020) by William Craft Brumfield, Professor of Slavic Studies at Tulane University (New Orleans), historian of architecture, photographer, member of the Russian Academy of Architecture and Construction Science, honorary fellow of the Russian Academy of the Fine Arts. Participants in the presentation included American and Russian art historians, photographers and photography researchers.
Professor Brumfield discussed his work on the book over a period of many years. The history behind the book began in 1970, when he first visited the Soviet Union. This trip had a significant influence on William Brumfield’s scholarly path: his research interests coalesced with Russian history as a means for the study and documentation of Russian architecture. At present, some 150,000 of Brumfield’s photographs are preserved in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC , and some 1,200 photographs are part of the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress
In 1985 Brumfield was invited to curate the first exhibit of color photographs from the Library of Congress collection of the renowned photographer and inventor Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944). The exhibit opened at the Library of Congress in the fall of 1986 and became a sensation. The digitization of the collection in 2000 made it freely available on the internet. (https://www.loc.gov/collections/prokudin-gorskii/about-this-collection/) Since that time, the Prokudin-Gorskii Collection has elicited unflagging interest on the part of researchers and the general public. Brumfield’s book presents a comparison of Prokudin-Gorskii’s architectural photographs with his own taken several decades later. This comparison provides a scholarly approach to an enormous quantity of photographs from two outstanding collections and reveals the architectural heritage of Russian and Central Asia in various periods.
During his presentation, Professor Brumfield also shared moments from the history of the two photographic collections. He gave special attention to the work of Prokudin-Gorskii with comments on his early 20th-century color photographs and an explanation of technical details of their creation. At the conclusion of the event, Willian Brumfield answered questions from the participants. A recording of the presentation in English and with Russian subtitles will be available on the Museum’s social media.
