6th KAZAN INTERNATIONAL PRINTMAKING BIENNALE "RIDER"
October - November 2021
Kazan International Printmaking Biennale has been held since 2011. In 2015, it received the name "Rider" in honor of the creative group of graphic artists "Rider", the activity of which in the 1920s turned Kazan into one of the centers for the development of graphic art in Russia.
Objectives of the Kazan Biennale are to stimulate interest in various types of printmaking; to promote the development of both traditional (etching, aquatint, dry point, incisor engraving, lithography, linocut, woodcut, mezzotinto, etc.), and the latest author's techniques of printmaking (excluding digital printing); to expand the creative possibilities for the graphic artists; to promote the exchange of art and practical experience of the artists from different cities, regions and countries, demonstrating the works of modern masters of printmaking from Russia and abroad, conducting master classes by the leading masters of printmaking.
The motto of the 6th Kazan International Biennale of Printed Graphics "Rider", held in the Year of Native Languages and National Unity in the Republic of Tatarstan: Это я! Бу – мин! That’s me! C’est moi! Das bin ich! Questo sono io! Soy yo! Se olen mina! Det är jag! Tas esmu es! Ку – эпӗ! Тиде – мый!..
The goal of the 2021 Biennale is to encourage artists to think about themselves and the fate of their country, their people, their native language; to stimulate various aspects of artists’ self-reflection- national, linguistic, age, gender, professional, etc.; to help them comprehend the language of graphic art as one of the forms of development of their personality and try to express their identity in various forms of printmaking.
The main exhibitions of the Biennale will be displayed in the halls of the “Khazine” National Art Gallery of the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan in the Kazan Kremlin.
Within the framework of the Biennale, several projects are being implemented:
1. the main exhibition of the works sent to of the Biennale and selected for participation by the Biennale Organizing Committee;
2. personal exhibition of the winner of the 5th Kazan International Printmaking Biennale (2019) Vera Karaseva (Russia, Kazan);
as well as several special projects in which artists from Russia and abroad are expected to participate.
The works created over the past 5 years in the techniques of classical engraving and modern modifications of printed graphics: etching, aquatint, drypoint, incisor engraving, mezzotint, linocut, woodcut, lithography, collagraphy, algraphy, etc., excluding digital printing are accepted for participation in the Biennale (the main exhibition)
The selection of works is carried out in 2 stages:
Stage 1 - preliminary selection: the application together with the photographs of works in digital format (up to 10 works in jpg / tif format, 300 dpi) must be sent to the email address: kazan-biennale@mail.ru by August 1, 2021
The Organizing Committee will select works (no more than 3) for participation in the exhibition and inform the authors about it no later than September 1, 2021.
Selected works must be delivered to the museum by September 15, 2021.
Works of nonresident and foreign participants are to be sent by mail at the expense of the author by registered mail, declared "printed materials" or "poster" (small formats - in a hard envelope, large - in tubes) to the address: 420015, Kazan, K. Marx st., 64, The State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan, with a note: 6th Printmaking Biennale. The postage must include a completed registration form and a power of attorney to donate works to the Museum with the personal signature of the author.
The works of Kazan participants must be framed under glass and delivered to the address:

On the reverse side of the works, it is necessary to indicate: the name and surname of the author, the title of the work, the year of creation, technique and dimensions in centimeters.
Stage 2 – final decision. An international jury of leading graphic artists and art critics will decide the winners of the Biennale and distribute four prizes, which correspond to monetary awards:
• 1st place - 40,000 rubles,
• 2nd place - 30,000 rubles,
• 3rd place - 20,000 rubles,
• Youth nomination "Perspective" - 10,000 rubles
The winners of the Biennale will be announced at the opening ceremony of the exhibition.
The full list of the biennial participants will be published on the website of the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan. The catalogue is to be published after the exhibition.
All participants of the Biennale receive a certificate of participation and the exhibition catalogue.
After the exhibition, the works of nonresident and foreign participants presented for the Biennale are donated to the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan.
The selection of the works of Kazan participants to be donated to the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan is made by the Museum's Expert Fund-Purchasing Committee and agreed with the author.
