30 сентября 2020 г. состоялось пятое мероприятие публичной программы “Talks: Books on Photography” в Галерее современного искусства Государственного музея изобразительных искусств Республики Татарстан. На онлайн-платформе Zoom прошла презентация книги “The Handbook of Photography Studies”, опубликованной под редакцией профессора Исследовательского Центра истории фотографии Университета Де Монтфорт (Великобритания), руководителя исследовательского проекта «Цифровое наследие в условиях культурных конфликтов» Гила Пастернака издательством «Блумсбери» («Рутледж») в 2020 году. В мероприятии приняли участие слушатели из России, США, Великобритании, Венгрии, Германии и Нидерландов. Среди них были исследователи фотографии, студенты, фотографы и искусствоведы.
В книге “The Handbook of Photography Studies” («Руководство по фотографическим исследованиям») представлен обзор современного состояния фотографических исследований, включающий аналитику тематических направлений, динамики исследовательских методологий и многочисленных научных проектов. “The Handbook of Photography Studies” вносит важный вклад в изучение фотографии и дает обширную информацию о предметной области. В этой книге собраны исследования специалистов из самого широкого диапазона научных дисциплин.
Гил Пастернак начал мероприятие с раскрытия своего понимания «фотографических исследований». Далее он рассмотрел два типа наиболее доминирующих исследовательских направлений в этой области - «история фотографии» и «фотографическая история». Он отметил, что они часто пересекаются, хотя и пояснил, что «история фотографии» отдает предпочтение изучению медиума, в то время как «фотографическая история» изучает общество и культуру с помощью использования фотографических практик или фотографий в качестве источников исследования. Особое внимание профессор Пастернак уделил истории становления фотографических исследований и их трансформации за последние пятьдесят лет. Главная часть дискуссии была посвящена презентации “The Handbook of Photography Studies”. Гил Пастернак поделился историей появления обложки и охарактеризовал все пять частей книги, в которой представлены тексты 28 исследователей из разных стран. В завершении дискуссии он рассказал о своей работе в качестве редактора этого коллективного труда, отдельно отметил критерии выбора авторов и описал процесс взаимодействия с ними во время подготовки книги к изданию. В конце мероприятия Гил Пастернак ответил на вопросы слушателей: он поделился размышлениями о фотообразовании, опираясь на свой собственный опыт преподавания курсов о фотографии. Он также рассказал о трансформации своего исследовательского подхода в изучении фотографии на разных этапах научной карьеры и высказал свое предположение о ближайшем будущем фотографических исследований и этой области в целом.

On September 30, 2020 we hosted the fifth event in the public program “Talks: Books on Photography" for the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan. In this online Zoom meeting, Gil Pasternak, Associate Professor in Social and Political Photographic Cultures in the Photographic History Research Centre at De Montfort University (United Kingdom) and Project Leader for the European Commission funded research program “Digital Heritage in Cultural Conflicts”, presented his book “The Handbook of Photography Studies” (London & New York: Bloomsbury Publishing / Routledge, 2020). Attendees to the presentation joined from Russia, the USA, the UK, Hungary, Germany, and the Netherlands. Among them were photography scholars, research students, photographers and art historians.
“The Handbook of Photography Studies” is a detailed overview of the field of photography studies, examining its thematic interests, dynamic research methodologies and multiple scholarly directions. The Handbook makes an important contribution to the field of photography studies and gives generous information about the field’s subjects of interest. This book brings together specialists from the field’s widest possible range of academic environments in the arts, humanities, and social and behavioral sciences.
Gil Pasternak started his presentation by providing his definition of photography studies. He then considered two types of the most dominant research trajectories in the field, to which he referred as “History of Photography” and “Photographic History". Explaining that often they also overlap he nevertheless clarified that the former prioritizes the study of the medium, while the latter studies society and culture through engagement with photographic practices or with photographs as research sources. As part of the discussion, Professor Pasternak also provided an overview of the field’s history and presented its transformation over the last 50 years. The main part of his talk was devoted to the presentation of “The Handbook of Photography Studies.” Gil Pasternak shared the story about its cover and discussed the scope of the book’s five parts, which altogether feature the work of 28 researchers from around the globe. At the end of the discussion, he told the participants about his work as an editor for the volume; he explained the criteria he used when commissioning the contributors and described the process of interacting with them during the production of the materials. In the conclusion of the event, Professor Pasternak answered questions from the participants: he shared some reflections about photographic education with reference to his own teaching experience on photography courses. He talked about the changes in his research approach to photography at different stages of his academic career. And he shared some of his views about what the near future may hold for scholarship in photography studies and for the field more generally.
